Wanda Blanche Johnson (1936-2023)
Wanda Blanche Johnson, née Bennett, 86, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2023.
Wanda was born on June 20, 1936 to Homer and Dixie Bennett in Chattanooga, TN, the youngest of a raucous household of 7 children.
She met the love of her life, Bob Johnson, in Marshall, TX at East Texas Baptist College in 1955, and they married in 1957, recently celebrating 65 years of loving marriage. They raised their only child Jeffry in a number of cities in Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, Missouri, and other places, before landing in Louisville, KY, accumulating a wealth of friends and experiences along the way. Wanda treasured trips with Bob to England, Scotland, Turkey, Israel, and other shared adventures.
A lover of beauty in things and people, Wanda was an incredible interior designer, a wonderful and innovative teacher, and a talented cook/baker, among other talents and passions. She approached her friendships with curiosity and interest and made everyone feel special. Wanda was a proud Kentucky Colonel and an active member and leader within the P.E.O. women’s philanthropic organization. Wanda and Bob have been active members of Broadway Baptist Church for 32 years.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Tommy Bennett and Bob Bennett, sisters, Florene Murray, Ilene Wheeler, Dixie Howe, and Jewell Bennett Jennings. She is survived by her husband Bob and her son Jeffry (husband David Goldstein).
A memorial and celebration of Wanda’s life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Broadway Baptist Church, Louisville, KY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association or Broadway Baptist Church.
The family wishes to say Thank You to Wanda’s caregiver Yolanda Bryant, all the caregivers and administrators at the campus of The Willows of Springhurst, Norton Brownsboro Hospital, and those who work as part of Hosparus Health, Kentucky Elderlaw, as well as loving neighbors and friends for the amazing care they provided Wanda and support for Bob.
